Safety
When exploring the waters of coastal Delaware, please remember that paddlers are required to have a personal floatation device (PFD) and a whistle with them when on the water. Always keep abreast of wind, tides, and temperature before paddling.
Here is more detailed safety information about paddling and boating in Delaware:
- The Delaware Office of Boating Safety and Education’s mission is to develop individual awareness, skills, commitment to safe responsible behavior, and constructive actions in safe boating. The goal for students is to be aware of state laws regarding safety violations and how to prevent them from happening while still enjoying Delaware’s waterways.
- This free online course, offered by BoaterExam.com and sanctioned by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard, provides guidance for safety while padding canoes, kayaks paddleboards and other non-motorized craft. It will earn you a Paddlesports Safety Certificate. Please note: it is not a Delaware Boating Safety Course.
- The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary has certified vessel examiners who will perform a free Vessel Safety Check (“VSC”) at your boat, at a time of mutual convenience. There is no charge, and no consequences if you don’t pass. Their goal is simply to help make boating as safe as possible for you, your family and your friends, through education.
